We went to the Centre for Adult Education (CAE Library) in Flinders lane and then to the State Library of Victoria. The purpose of the excursion was to encourage students to join the library as members which allows them to borrow materials such as English language learning resources such as textbooks and English language audio visual materials.
We first went to the CAE library where the students went through the process of joining the library as members. Students were then provided a research activity to encourage them to use the library catalogue and find books. This also allowed students a chance to wander around the library and familliarise themselves with where everything was. The activity which they undertook was not linked to any particular unit but it was a perfect opportunity to begin one of the units activities (VU21509) task 3 – Speech. The time spent at the library was not all serious and academic. It was encouraged that the students look around and find some books of interest and attempt some pleasure reading in English. Some students were a bit more adventurous and borrowed out a book or two to try and read at home.
After a quick lunchbreak, we went to the State Library where we again, joined as library members and then had a look around at the many different exhibits and reading rooms. We also tried to look for the English language resources section but in the State Library, there seemed to be no such section.
At the conclusion of this day, I like to think that students felt more comfortable with using the library services around Melbourne and they know about some of the free and fantastic resources available to them which could assist them in their English learning endeavours.
