August has been quite an academically enriching month. We had quite a few student engagement activities targeted towards enhancing excellence through additional workshops.
Orange International College created and conducted an Academic Writing workshop. This workshop was designed for students who are seeking to improve their writing skills, with a focus on developing a well- structured essay, learning academic vocabulary and the linking devices necessary for connecting ideas at the sentence and paragraph level.
When students continue their studies at university level, they are expected to produce written assignments. Assignments are set and marked by tutors/teachers or lecturers on a regular basis. One of the most common problems students face at university is that they seem to use a rather informal and casual tone. However, assignment writing is expected to be formal in tone, well structured and unambiguous. This is why writing skills and improving them is essential for further studies. To cater for our students’ academic written work in English, and the demanding nature of writing essays, OIC designed a workshop to help students understand the structure and language needed to compose an academic piece of writing.
The focus of the workshop was the following:
- Differentiate between academic and non-academic texts.
- Understand what to do and what not to do in academic writing.
- Write a well-structured academic essay.
- Use linking devices correctly.
