The General English Program (Beginner to Advanced) has been designed for international students from non-English speaking backgrounds seeking to improve their English language skills for social, work and study purposes.
Our General English Program focuses on developing our students’ skills through a blend of methodologies combining the best of traditional approaches – a solid grammar and vocabulary basis – and modern communicative approaches, such as role-plays, personalization and gamification.
The course consists of six proficiency levels, in which students are assigned after taking a placement test. Depending on their fortnightly test results and class performance, students may be recommended to take a level exit test, which enables them to move up to the next level.

Assessment methods
Students will complete progress tests based on what they have learned, as a way of assessing their learning and achievement.
Once you are placed in the most suitable level, on the basis of the placement test, you will be able to commence your course.
Formative assessments are taken every week. Summative assessments are completed by week 5 and week 10. The tests you will take are based on the unit outcomes and your studies, and are designed to track your progress and general readiness to move up to the next level. The level exit test is based on the level outcomes, and not the unit outcomes.

Study mode
Our students receive 20 hours per week on campus, through the face-to-face delivery method. There is no online component to this course, however, students are provided with additional activities for independent study through our online learning platform. Our General English Program combines the best of traditional approaches – a solid grammar syllabus with controlled practice and introduction of systematic vocabulary through reading and writing activities – with modern communicative approaches, such as situational syllabus and personalized practice, real language work in real situations and gamification of activities. We also acknowledge out-of-classroom learning and development and organize regular excursions and extra-curricular workshops and sessions for our students.
Entry Requirements
Before you begin your course application, ensure you meet all the requirements listed below.
- There are no academic entry requirements.
- Students will be required to complete an placement test to ascertain their English level. This will enable them to join the appropriate level of class.
Learning outcomes
This course aims to develop students’ general English language skills and confidence in using English within a broad range of contexts when living, studying or working in an English speaking environment.
Course pathway
Successful completion of one level will allow you to gain entry into the level above. If you are on an academic pathway to other courses at Orange College, you will be able to transition into these courses after completing your General English course with achieved Upper Intermediate level.
Students undertaking the course may use the course to prepare themselves for further study in the Australian VET sector or higher education or to improve their English language skills for work /life in Australia or back in their home countries.
