Thinking about a future in painting and decorating? The CPC30620 Certificate III in Painting and Decorating at Orange College is your pathway into a hands-on, creative, and in-demand trade within Australia’s construction industry.
This qualification covers the essential core skills required across the construction sector, plus specialised training in two key fields of painting and decorating. You won’t just study techniques—you’ll develop real practical abilities in a genuine or closely simulated workplace environment, because the industry requires training that feels exactly like the job itself.
Every unit in this course is delivered with a strong focus on doing, not just learning. From surface preparation to decorative finishes, you’ll gain the practical experience and confidence needed to step into the workforce as a qualified painter and decorator.

To achieve this qualification, the candidate must demonstrate competency in 29 units of competency, including: 26 core units,3 elective units.
An asterisk (*) against a unit code below indicates that there is a prerequisite requirement that must be met. Prerequisite unit(s)must be assessed before assessment of any unit of competency with an asterisk. Check the unit of competency for information on specific prerequisite requirements. All prerequisite requirements are packaged in the qualification.
Elective units of competency can be selected as follows:
- 3 from the listed electives https://training.gov.au/Training/Details/CPC30620 or
- 2 from listed electives and 1 from any endorsed Training Package or accredited course, as long as it contributes to a valid, industry supported vocational outcome and supports the AQF level of this qualification.
Assessment methods for this qualification includes written questions, projects, observations, presentations, case studies, reports, practical activities, third party reports and logbooks, on the job training assessment consistent with apprenticeship mode.
- Learners are required to be competent in written and spoken English and will undertake a Language, Literacy and Numeracy test prior to commencing the training. Refer to LLN policy for further details.
- Students must have a sense of balance and the ability to cope with the physical demands of the training and assessment that involves working at heights, heavy lifting, manual labour, operation of tools (both manual and power tools) etc.
- Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) Policy is applicable for this course. The device must have camera and speaker functions. Please refer to our BYOD Policy for details.
- Internet Access with a computer with up-to-date software, including Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat Reader and Adobe Flash Player.
- Basic digital literacy (ability to communicate and access information through digital technologies like internet platforms, social media, search engines, emails and basic use of MS office products).
- Students should have access to the following work safe clothing (at their own cost) that are suitable for a working on a construction site:
- Personal protective equipment (PPE)
- Appropriate work wear (including long sleeve shirt for outdoor work)
- Steel Capped safety footwear
- Hard Hat
- Safety Glasses
- Earmuffs or earplugs
A participant who is
- Currently working in the building and construction industry and have been registered or intending to be registered in NSW Carpentry Apprenticeship.
- Must be 15 years or more, (For participants under the age of 18 years, enrolment form must be signed by parents/guardians on behalf of the participants).
- No longer in secondary education – except for registered home school students and
- Living or working in NSW (or an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person who does not live or work in NSW but lives in specific defined interstate NSW border areas)
- An Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident, humanitarian visa holder or New Zealand citizen.
- Should hold a White Card which is required before the participant can step on a building and construction site. (Note: Orange College
delivers the unit of competence CPCWHS1001 – Prepare To work safely in a construction industry and is authorised to issue the White Card.
If a certificate or statement of results is produced and verified, a credit transfer process will be initiated by Orange College in relation to the units as per the training plan. Credit transfer is a process that provides students with agreed and consistent credit outcomes for components of a qualification based on identified equivalence in content and learning outcomes between matched qualifications. Recognition of prior learning is an assessment process that involves assessment of an individual’s relevant prior learning(including formal, informal and non-formal learning) to determine the credit outcomes of an individual application for credit.

On successful completion of this course the learners are going to be awarded CPC30620 Certificate III in Painting and Decorating,which is a nationally recognised qualification.
Students who do not complete all units may be eligible for a Statement of Attainment in partial completion of the CPC30620Certificate III in Painting and Decorating.
